Burns and Roe to Engineer Aiken County Laboratory
By Burns and Roe
The Burns and Roe Group, Inc. announced today that one of its subsidiaries, Burns and Roe Enterprises, Inc., was awarded a contract to provide engineering and design services for the Aiken County Technology Laboratory. Burns and Roe, in conjunction with Kuhlke Construction and Associates will be part of a design-build team responsible for the project from conceptual engineering to start-up. Design will begin immediately with a construction completion date anticipated during October 2001. Burns and Roe will execute the design work using engineering and architectural personnel in their Aiken, South Carolina office.

The $2.7 million laboratory will encompass 21,000 square feet and will be built within the Savannah River Research Campus adjacent to the Cooperative Research Center. The new laboratory and office space will house two sections of the Savannah River Technology Center, the Savannah River Site's applied research and development laboratory. One section will study environmental biotechnology, which is the use of naturally occurring organisms and plants for environmental cleanup. The other section will study waste treatment technologies. The laboratory will conduct advanced research programs to address environmental and remediation challenges on a national and international scale.

Mr. Ronnie Young, the chairman of the Aiken County Council, stated, "We hope this technology laboratory will be the spark that is the beginning of future development at the Campus. The goal of the Campus is to be a gateway to the technology from the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site to the private enterprise sector. This is a super beginning."

"Burns and Roe is pleased to be part of the team challenged with the goal of providing Aiken County a state of the art facility," stated Guy Griswold, Burns and Roe's Office Manager. "We look forward working on this very important project for the Aiken community."
