| On January 12th Burns and Roe Services Corporation (BRSC), Virginia Beach, VA and Martin Horn, Inc. a general contractor in Charlottesville, VA, dedicated the nation’s newest “Green” building. BRSC and Martin Horn helped make Charlottesville a little greener and reduced building operating costs by earning the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Existing Building (LEED-EB): Operations and maintenance (O&M) Silver Certification for Martin Horn’s headquarters office building. The building is the first LEED-EB certified project in Central Virginia.
Silver Certification
After a year-long effort, LEED Silver certification was achieved under the Existing Buildings: O&M Rating System. Some of the project’s highlights are:
• Energy Star and highly efficient furnaces and air conditioners;
• Low flow toilets, faucets and shower heads;
• Low mercury light bulbs;
• A rainwater collection tank.
“From using a Green cleaning service and making sustainable purchasing our standard to improving our Energy Star score and harvesting rain water, it’s been rewarding to not only make sure our side of the street is clean, but also to see our employees take pride and assurance in all the LEED for Existing Building efforts that contribute to the greening of our building,” said Ted Horn, Vice President.
BRSC provided the technical solutions for the LEED Energy and Atmosphere prerequisites and credits and the Water Efficiency prerequisites and credits. BRSC created a building operating plan, calculated the energy use index, provided retro-commissioning services for the building, established the water baseline, developed specifications for water reducing fixtures, calculated the avoided carbon emissions and provided other technical support.

A critical step in obtaining ‘holistic’ green solutions is to address not only New Construction but also existing conditions in our nation’s building inventory. Martin Horn’s success with this project demonstrates their leadership and entrepreneurial initiative in making Virginia ‘greener’ one building at a time,” stated Carmine Battafarano, Vice President-BRSC.
