| Burns and Roe Enterprises, Inc. will support Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) in the development, licensing and delivery of the mPowerTM reactor. The B&W mPowerTM Generation III++ reactor will be built in North America based on proven technology. The reactor design is a passively safe Advanced Light Water Reactor (ALWR) with a below-ground containment structure. This optimized ALWR represents true Generation III++ nuclear technology that B&W believes can be certified, manufactured and operated within today’s existing U.S. regulatory, industrial supply chain and utility operational infrastructure. Burns and Roe is performing general design work for B&W in support of initial licensing preparation and architectural-engineering services for the mPowerTM reactor. The preliminary design responsibilities include balance of plant, primary coolant system, primary containment, reactor services building, control building, site plant development and cost estimating. Detailed design includes advance of preliminary design beyond levels required for licensing submittal.
The basic feature of the mPowerTM plant design will be to produce a nominal 125 megawatts (MWe) providing a smaller load that is attractive to locations with grid instability. Another feature will be reduced capital cost and a construction schedule significantly less than large plants (36-48 months vs. 8-10 year construction schedule). It will be designed to provide capacity from 125 to 750 MWe.
