Burns and Roe’s Chairman Receives 2009 James B. Porter, Jr. Award for Technology Leadership
By Burns and Roe
The Burns and Roe Group, Inc. announced that its Chairman and President, K. Keith Roe, was the recipient of FIATECH’s 2009 James B. Porter, Jr. Award for Technology Leadership. The James B. Porter, Jr. Award for Technology Leadership was established in 2007 and bears the name of the original recipient, James B. Porter, Jr. The award honors and celebrates the recipient’s vision, leadership, technical acumen and commitment to people and to advancing the industry and the goals of FIATECH. Annually, this prestigious award is given to a deserving individual who is selected by the FIATECH Board of Directors and exemplifies these characteristics.

James B. Porter, Jr., Chief Engineer and Vice President, Engineering and Operations, DuPont (retired) presented Keith with the award saying "Keith's vision and his personal commitment to it becoming a reality were the key factors in FIATECH’s successful launch and its growth into a global leader in the development and deployment of the most business effective capital project technology.”

The Porter Award was instituted by FIATECH, an industry consortium that provides global leadership in identifying and accelerating the development, demonstration and deployment of fully integrated and automated technologies to deliver the highest business value throughout the life cycle of all types of capital projects. The Ceremony was held in Henderson, Nevada on April 7, 2009 at FIATECH’s Celebration of Engineering & Technology Innovation (CETI) Awards Gala in conjunction with its 2009 Technology Conference and Showcase.

“From its inception as an idea within the CII Breakthrough Strategy Committee, Keith Roe has clearly seen the vision of FIATECH, the promise of its goals and the benefits resulting from their realization,” stated Reginald Gagliardo, Senior Vice President, Burns and Roe. “He has been an unswerving leader in ensuring that FIATECH progressed from its foundling stages to the mature and influential organization it is today, and has been a tireless advocate of FIATECH within our own organization, with our clients and in the markets we serve.”

Under Mr. Roe’s direction and guidance, Burns and Roe has continued to be one of the pre-eminent architect engineering firms in the industry. Currently, the company is heavily involved in the design and construction of state-of-the-art, high efficiency power generating facilities, having supported 20,000 MW of new generation projects in the last 5 years alone. In the nuclear power arena, Burns and Roe used its extensive experience in the design and construction of the first wave of nuclear power generating stations to take an early leadership position in offering services for design and equipment procurement for safety upgrades of Soviet designed nuclear power plants in former Soviet Union countries. Most recently, Burns and Roe has been awarded several contracts to provide licensing support for the next generation nuclear plants, to participate in the design of current nuclear plants, and to assist the government of Thailand in its development plans for new nuclear power plants. Keith Roe received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Princeton University and his M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Keith’s quiet persistence coupled with a strong strategic vision directed the course of FIATECH during its formative years and helped make it into a guiding force in the engineering and construction industry,” remarked Tom Hannigan, President of Zachry Industrial Services and Chair of FIATECH’s Board of Directors. “The seeds of innovation and applied technology that Keith helped to sow and nurture through FIATECH are now bearing fruit to the benefit of the capital projects industry.”

FIATECH is a consortium of industries and companies – owners from the industrial, power, and retail markets that build large assets such as refineries, power plants, large commercial buildings, or manufacturing facilities. In addition, it includes the leading providers of engineering, design, and construction services. And finally, but very critically, it encompasses some of the most influential technology providers in the world – offering everything from cutting edge software solutions, nanotechnology, new emerging materials, lasers, GPS, RFID to remote sensing capabilities… the list is endless. All members of the consortium are united by one common goal – to make a step change improvement in the design, engineering, construction, operations and maintenance of large capital assets. Comprised of active and engaged member participants, it is the antithesis of the passive go-to-an-annual-conference-and-play-golf type of organization. FIATECH is science; FIATECH is engineering and technology; FIATECH is creativity and innovation.
