| Burns and Roe has been selected to carry out a 20-month feasibility study for Thailand’s first nuclear power plant. The study is intended to provide major input to key decisions Thailand has yet to make about the direction of its nuclear ambitions. By the end of 2010, Burns and Roe will make recommendations for siting, technology, and reactor size. The resulting recommendations will then support the bidding process when construction starts in 2014.
Burns and Roe’s study will include project viability, construction cost, location, environmental management, safety as well as nuclear energy technology selection. Thai officials have stated that the first two plants are likely to start operating in 2020. Thailand plans to build four nuclear power plants at a total cost of about $8 billion with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts each.
“Being part of Thailand’s future power ambitions is very exciting,” stated Keith K. Roe, Burns and Roe’s President and Chairman. “We will bring the expertise necessary to ensure that Thailand’s future includes safe, reliable and carbon neutral energy sources.”
