| Dignitaries, clients, friends and business associates convened in Washington D.C. at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery on April 9, 2008 for the final in a memorable year-long series of celebrations marking Burns and Roe’s 75th Anniversary. Guests enjoyed cocktails in the Gallery’s Great Hall before moving on to the evening’s main events and dinner in the Courtyard. After opening remarks from Keith Roe, Carolyn Carr, the Acting Director of the National Portrait Gallery, provided a brief background of the Portrait Gallery and the process of selecting the portraits. There are 2,000 portraits in the Gallery.
Pulitzer Prize winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, author most recently of the acclaimed Team of Rivals, and who has written histories of presidents Lincoln, LBJ, Kennedy and Roosevelt, was the evening’s keynote speaker. Ms Goodwin is also a commentator for NBC and a consultant and on-air personality for PBS documentaries, including Ken Burns’ “The History of Baseball.” She also has the distinction of being the first female journalist to enter the Red Sox locker room. Ms. Goodwin spoke about past presidents, the history of baseball and Burns and Roe’s 75th Anniversary. Opera Camerata of Washington D.C. entertained guests throughout the evening performing classical music and opera favorites.
